The United States has approved a potential $346 million sale of bombs, rockets, and advanced ammunition to Nigeria, in what could become one of the countryโs most significant defence procurements in recent years.
In a statement on Wednesday, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed that Nigeria requested an extensive package, including 1,002 MK-82 general-purpose 500lb bombs, 1,002 MXU-650 Air Foil Groups (AFGs), and 5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II rockets equipped with high-explosive warheads and MK66-4 rocket motors.
The proposed deal also covers FMU-139 joint programmable fuzes, bomb components, impulse cartridges, high-explosive and practice rockets, integration support, test equipment, and technical, engineering, and logistics assistance from both the US government and contractors.
According to the DSCA, the primary contractors will be Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defense, and BAE Systems โ defence giants known for cutting-edge military technology. Lockheed Martin, for instance, is behind the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, and several missile defence systems.
While the sale has been approved by the US State Department, it is not yet final. The DSCA stressed that the transaction aims to strengthen Nigeriaโs ability to counter security threats and improve regional stability.
If completed, the deal would represent a significant boost to Nigeriaโs airstrike and precision-attack capabilities at a time when the country faces escalating security challenges.
